Weekday noon: an hour at The Excellent Sauna

It is lunchtime on an ordinary weekday. On the pavement outside the Grand Emperor Hotel, office workers are carrying sandwiches back to their desks, and a delivery rider has pulled up at the kerb. You walk the other way, into the main building. The Excellent Sauna opens at noon, and the therapists start at noon too, so nobody is waiting on anybody.

You booked through us, so a private car collected you from your own hotel and set you down at the door. You change, sit for a while by the pool, and let the noise of the street drain away. Upstairs, your room is being made ready.

A little after twelve

There is a light knock, and your therapist comes in. The first thing you notice is how clean the room smells, like a white towel that has just come off the line. She showered before she came in, and she will shower again once you have gone. That is how the house works, and the hour starts from there.

She is easy to talk to. You chat for a minute, and somewhere in it you mention that your neck has been stiff all week. She makes a note of it.

The first pass is nothing but oil. She warms it between her hands, then carries it from your heel to your shoulder in one long stroke that never breaks. By the time she reaches the top, your body has stopped feeling like a collection of parts and feels like a single piece.

Only then does she go back for the detail. The calf runs into the thigh, the thigh into the hip, the small of the back up into the shoulders, and each place carries on from the one before. She finishes at the neck, the same stiff neck you mentioned when she came in, and she stays there longer than anywhere else. At some point the conversation stopped, and you could not say when.

Turning over

She rests a hand on your shoulder and helps you roll onto your back. Lying face up in a room you do not know, almost everyone tenses for a second. There is nothing to worry about. She does this many times a day and her hands stay steady the whole way, Close your eyes and leave the rest to her.

On your back, she starts with another long line, from the shoulder down to the fingertips, and then draws each finger out in turn. She leaves the stomach until last. She does not skip the toes or the underarms, the places a hurried hand would pass over. Then hot towels lift the oil away while you lie still. You never get up, and you honestly could not say how long it has been.

Afterwards, the same afternoon

The Excellent Sauna is in the main building of the Grand Emperor Hotel on the Macau Peninsula, and it is open from 12:00 to 04:00. Therapists are on shift from 12:00 to 04:00, which is the same window. The house closes at 04:00 and does not take overnight stays, and a paid private rest room is available during opening hours.

On the September 2026 board, the entry choice, authentic health massage, is MOP 1,988 for 90 minutes. The popular choice, soft-style massage in green, white, silver or purple, runs from 2,988 to 3,988. The premium choice, soft-style massage in yellow, gold or black, runs from 4,188 to 5,088, and Japanese-Korean soft-style massage is 5,588.
